I wanted to design, create and construct a dining table which could seat 6-8 people whilst incorporating modern styling whilst using unique materials which should allow me to expand my knowledge of design and construction whilst testing my creativity. I wanted it to exhibit a bold, yet subtle design which would differentiate itself from other available products on the market, hoasting eye-catching aspects.When shopping for dining tables there are plenty of options, most of which are bland and lifeless with a sky-high price tag. Incorporating strong horizontal and vertical lines, high build quality, individualized design at a reasonably affordable price would make my product successful. I wanted to create something unique, something that differentiated itself from other things in that market, I was looking at dining tables and thought ‘’These all look the same’’ so I decided to make one that would stand out among the marketplace. This project has allowed me to design and build myself a dining table which stood out from amongst the rest, a project that let me challenge my creativity. Also allowing me to learn different types of fabrication techniques and allowed me to develop a better understanding of woodworking to create a unique and one-off product for my Design and Technology major. I had used a Japanese Cedar because of its unique aesthetic as well as being a lightweight alternative compared to other timbers such as Oak, As well as featuring a resin top to square of the edges and fill in all the gaps and voids in the timber and provide a strong and durable finish to the table top. I learnt how epoxy resin works and how the timber affects the epoxy resin as well as how to build a high quality piece of furniture.
