A note from Mr Simon Denley...

To Year 12 Music 2020, I’ve been very impressed with your focused dedication to your performance pieces and your compositions. The standard of your work has improved so much over this year that you will truly get the HSC mark that you so richly deserve. It has been a pleasure to teach you, to mentor you in your performance choices and to see you grow, not only as musicians but as people. I wish you all the success in your future studies or into the workforce, whichever is your choice. I look forward to meeting up with you in 2021. Stay in touch after your HSC and I look forward to hearing about all of the amazing journeys you have been on.

Mr Denley

A note from Mr Lloyd Grant...

It has been a pleasure guiding you through your last term of HSC Music. Whether it was working with you on your performance pieces, compositions or revision of the concepts and aural questions, I have seen improvement in each and everyone of you. Good luck with your future endeavours.

Mr Grant

Music 1 Course Description

This course provide students with the opportunity to study the concepts of music through the learning experiences of performance, composition, musicology and aural within the context of a range of styles, periods and genres. All students studying the course nominate three electives made up of any combination of performance, composition and/or musicology which reflect the three topics studied in the HSC course. Every student across the state, however, must complete one performance piece from any of the three topics studied and this is known as their Core Performance piece.

Each of the students in this class studied three topics including:

- An Instrument and its Repertoire

- Music for Small Ensembles

- Music for Radio, Film, Television and Multimedia

Performance Information

Students can choose to perform the piece unaccompanied or with accompanists or backing tracks. This year, due to COVID-safe requirements, each student was only permitted to use one accompanist for their performance pieces, if they wanted live accompaniment. Some of their chosen repertoire were specifically written and composed for multiple instruments and parts. The students worked extremely hard to adapt their repertoire to satisfy these requirements, using backing tracks where available or reduced accompaniment to just one extra part.

The performance clips featured here are from their HSC Trial Examinations conducted earlier this term.

Composition Information

The students that chose to compose a piece of Music as one of their electives each chose to write a piece for a small ensemble. Students studied music written for small ensembles and gained inspiration from the manner of which the musical concepts interact with each other within the context of an ensemble work. A combination of traditional and non-traditional ensembles were chosen by the students to compose for. Each student utilised a music notation software called 'Musescore' and the recordings of these compositions have been produced from this software.
