Term 2: COVID-19 Online Learning Digital Photography Tasks

Flat Lay Photography: Students were introduced to flat lay photography and challenged to create an interesting flat lay composition of objects that were helping them maintain good mental health during COVID-19 Lock down. We also discussed how social media is a platform for exhibition for Photographers and how students use photography in the world today. Using flat lay photography, create a personal COVID-19 survival kit.

Consider:

  • What’s getting you through the pandemic?

  • What’s helping you stay sane, healthy, and happy?

  • What objects might you use to symbolize your survival kit?

Flat Lay Photography: Students learned about the elements of photography using pattern, colour and symmetry to create a flat lay photograph using natural lighting. Students looked at the flat lay photographic work of American Photographer Adam Hillman and how he uses mobile phone photography and social media to exhibit his photographs.

Flat Lay Photography: Students learned about the artist Kirstin Meyers and investigated her company Salvage Designs. Students were tasked with creating a flat lay composition that was circular, used pattern and flat coloured backgrounds.

Flat Lay Photography: Students learned about the artist Carolyn South and how to use flat lay photography in a commercial setting for advertising products and merchandise. Students were asked to select an item they have in their home, create a dynamic backdrop and using pattern to compliment the object.

  • Chose an object you own and make a creative flat lay for that product that is visually appealing and could be used for advertisement purposes.

  • Your flat lay must include a Product (e.g. object) for advertisement

  • Include colours that compliment the object

  • Include the element of pattern around the object

Flat Lay Photography: Students were told to use their knowledge of flat lay photography to create a flat lay of their choice. Choose one or more of the following options to create a flat lay photograph.

  • Cut pieces that combine one colour object over geometric, cut-paper background

  • Cut and rearrange the same object to create a geometric pattern

  • Create a gradient geometric pattern

  • Create a design using the shape of your choice

  • Create a design using objects of the same colour

  • Recreate a mater painting.

Learning about camera angles: “Shoet” the Same Object

For this project, you are going to demonstrate your ability to take pictures from many different angles of: the lowly shoe.

Choose your favourite shoe, a well-worn shoe, a colourful shoe, but, you must shoot a shoe.

  •     Take a total of 15-20 images of the same shoe.

  •     Look for different angles and perspectives on the shoe.

  •     Get close and get creative with the shoe!

  •     Choose a well-lit area and make sure the background is not cluttered, which may cause a distraction from the shoe.

When finished, create a collage of at least 9 of the shots in canva.com or an app like PhotoGrid (free!)

Term 3: DSRL cameras and digital editing

Students completed an introduction to DSRL cameras that the College has for student use. Some students brought their own DSLR cameras and wanted to learn how to use them more. Students also learnt digital editing software Photopea.com and Photoshop to create surreal like compositions.

Surreal Portrait Photography: Double Exposure overlay in Photopea.com students used images from the internet of celebrities and overlayed other image content to create a double exposure look. Students learnt about various blending options, merging layers and colour balance options.

Surreal Portrait Photography: Levitation Photoshop Task. Students took photographs of each other around the College and used chairs or stools to pose on. Using digital editing software students learned how to remove the chair or stool to create a portrait that appears to be levitating.

Surreal Portrait Photography: Missing Pieces Photoshop Task. Students took portrait photographs of each other around the College using tripods. For this task the students had to take two photographs and merge them together on Photoshop. One photograph was of the person in the portrait and the second photograph was of the same space without the figure. In Photoshop areas were selected and removed to create missing pieces like a jigsaw puzzle.
